This autumn the Everyman theatre embarks on an exciting new adventure with the Everyman Unbound season which features two productions; John Ford’s ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore and Anthology, a co-production of seven new stories by local writers.
Taking inspiration from the theatre’s origins, both productions will feature an ensemble of actors working in rep, between September 16 and October 30.
Everyman Unbound opens with a modern adaptation of a play that remains one of the most shocking and powerful theatre stories of all time, John Ford’s classic ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore. Chris Meads directs this explosive new production about sexual transgression and youthful revolt as Annabella and her brother Giovanni crash through the boundaries of what can be said, what can be read, what to believe and who you can love.
The special ensemble of actors brought together for this ambitious season of work come from every era of the theatre’s past and present, while others represents it’s bright future. Stuart Richman, who featured in the Everyman’s first ever production (Henry IV Part I) in 1964, returns to the theatre alongside Ken Bradshaw (Liverpool Heartbeats), Kevin Harvey (Yellowman), Matti Houghton (Caucasian Chalk Circle), Paul McCleary (Much Ado About Nothing,RSC), Eileen O’Brien (When We Are Married), Emily Pithon (Tartuffe), Nicholas Shaw (Romeo and Juliet) and Hugh Skinner (The Enchantment).
Anthology is seven new stories by some of the Everyman’s most innovative playwrights. Directed by Alan Lane, artistic director of Slung Low – regarded as one of the UK’s pioneering theatre companies – the production will take theatre beyond the walls of the Everyman.
Anthology’s six Liverpool writers all have close links with the Everyman – Robert Farquhar (Insomnobabble), Lizzie Nunnery (Intemperance), Kellie Smith (Gas Off), Esther Wilson (Unprotected), Laurence Wilson (Lost Monsters) and Jeff Young (The Man in the Moon). They will be joined by Slung Low co-founder Matthew David Scott, who has written for all of the company’s shows since they were formed in 2000. The seven unique performance pieces will create an intimate atmosphere, as a single character leads the audience on an unknown journey of discovery.
